Sheba, Kingdom of
Sheba was a historical kingdom located in the southern Arabian Peninsula, most likely centered in present-day Yemen, and is attested in South Arabian inscriptions under the name Sabaʾ. It flourished between the late second millennium BCE and the early first millennium CE as a major polity in the incense trade network. Sheba is referenced in Biblical texts, particularly in the account of the Queen of Sheba’s visit to Solomon (1 Kings 10; 2 Chronicles 9), and in the Qur'an (27:20–44), where it appears in narratives involving wisdom, governance, and divine signs.
Sheba, Queen of
A monarch mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (1 Kings 10; 2 Chronicles 9) and the Qur'an (27:20–44), traditionally associated with the Sabaean kingdom in South Arabia. Known as Bilqis in Islamic tradition and Makeda in Ethiopian lore, she is portrayed as a powerful foreign ruler who visits Solomon to test his wisdom, bearing lavish gifts. In the Qur'anic account, her encounter with Sulayman emphasizes divine signs and her eventual submission to monotheism. Though unnamed in scripture and unattested archaeologically, her figure is rooted in longstanding literary, theological, and dynastic traditions across multiple cultures.
Sheba Son of Bichri
In the Old Testament, Sheba son of Bichri was a Benjaminite rebel mentioned in the Hebrew Bible (2 Samuel 20) who led an insurrection against King David following the return to Jerusalem after Absalom’s revolt. Described as a "worthless man" (ish belial), Sheba exploited tribal tensions between Judah and the northern tribes of Israel, declaring, “We have no share in David.” His rebellion was short-lived; he fled to the city of Abel Beth Maacah, where he was ultimately executed after the city's inhabitants, persuaded by Joab’s siege, delivered his severed head to avoid destruction.
